What Happened This January?

How everything changed in DTC

This January started like any January for our brands in DTC

We ran the classic “new years” sales…

And when that dwindled off we started on “new year… new you” type of messaging (not for every brand… but you get the idea!)

But we started to notice something really strange…

Facebook CPA’s for a select group of clients and brands that I consult with were up year over year in a HUGE way.

We saw the carnage all over Twitter - brands that were able to scale up until now were completely decimated

And so we went into detective mode to figure out what was going on…

We looked at all of the usual suspect places at first and of course tried to blame the macro trends (which I think may still be a small contributor)

We thought maybe there had been a giant reset of the algo and things would reset themselves.

But none of these could explain the fact that it wasn’t affecting everyone!

I must have spent 100 hours looking into it…

And I finally found the problem (and the solution) to what was going on with Facebook ads

It was so drastic of a change in fact that we went from 54% of clients not meeting CPA targets in January to on 12% the month later…

And that’s across a pretty large sample size!

So… what did I do?
